HelianthusYoung sunflowers display traits of the behaviour heliotropism, meaning they grow towards the sun, facing east in the morning and moving west throughout the day. The tallest sunflower ever to be recorded was grown in Germany in 2014, and reached a height of 9.17m.
Uses
In Mexico, the sunflower was used to sooth chest pain. Many Native American tribes also utilised the plan’s curing properties. The oil extracted from sunflowers is used for cooking and as a salad dressing. The seeds also provide a healthy snack. The interior of the stalk is one of the lightest substances known and is used in laboratories
